Do You Oil Before or After a Hammam?
Both. Scalp before. Face, hair and body after, on wet skin.
This is the question I hear most before the Hammam Rose Ritual I lead at Tierra Santa, Faena Miami Beach. Everyone knows oil belongs somewhere around the heat. Almost nobody knows where.
The answer is both, in two different places, and the order is the whole secret.
Before the heat: the scalp
A few drops of rose oil, worked into the scalp and through the lengths before you enter. The steam that would dry the hair out now works for it: heat opens, and the oil goes deeper than it ever could at room temperature. While the Hammam works on your skin, the oil works on your hair. You walk out of the heat with a treatment already done.
During the heat: nothing
Bare skin. Heat and water need direct contact to do their work, and anything on the skin stands between. The one exception is breath: a drop warmed between the palms, cupped over the nose, three slow breaths. The rose arrives before it touches the skin.
The ten minutes after: everything
This is the window. The skin is warm, the pores are open, and the body is damp. Do not dry off completely. Press the oil into wet skin: the face first, two drops. Then the ends of the hair. Then the body, shoulders to ankles, three or four drops. The water on the skin spreads the oil, and the oil seals the water in. That is why the softness lasts for days instead of hours.
Press, never rub. The warmth does the spreading.
Why an infusion and not an essential oil
Skin that heat has opened takes in more of whatever you give it, so give it something gentle. Pure essential oil on freshly opened skin is a no go. A petal infusion carries the rose at the strength of the petal itself, in jojoba and sweet almond, the two plant oils closest to the skin's own.
The ETHERNAL Signature Oil, 30 ml, is that infusion, made for face, hair and body, which is exactly what these ten minutes ask of one bottle. No Hammam nearby? A hot shower, taken slowly, earns you the same ten minutes.
