Can Sensitive Skin Wear Perfume?
Yes, when the scent is carried in oil.
A client told me she had given up perfume entirely. Every one she tried left her skin flushed and tight by lunchtime. She assumed her skin could not wear fragrance.
It was never the fragrance. It was what the fragrance was dissolved in.
What is in a spray perfume
An eau de parfum is fifteen to twenty percent fragrance concentrate. The remaining eighty percent is ethanol, with a little water.
Ethanol is a solvent. That is its job in the bottle, to hold the scent molecules and carry them into the air the moment it touches warm skin. It is also a solvent on the skin. Sprayed daily on the neck and wrists, it dissolves the lipids the skin uses as its barrier, and the barrier is thinner on the neck than almost anywhere else on the body.
On most people this shows as nothing, or as a little dryness. On skin that is already reactive, eczema prone, or rosacea prone, it shows as flushing and irritation, the reaction my client took for an allergy. Dermatologists routinely tell patients with those conditions to keep alcohol based fragrance away from affected areas. The scent was never the problem. The carrier was.
The second cause: the fragrance itself
Sometimes it is the scent. The European Union requires twenty six fragrance allergens to be declared on labels, and the most common of them, linalool, limonene, citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, are in nearly every spray perfume on the market. Synthetic fragrance blends, listed as parfum, contain dozens of aroma chemicals at once, so there is no way to know which one your skin objects to.
A single botanical, worn at the strength the plant itself carries it, is the only way to know exactly what is on your skin.
What an oil perfume does instead
An oil perfume has no ethanol. The fragrance is held in a plant oil, and the plant oil is itself skincare.
Jojoba resembles the skin's own sebum so closely that the skin absorbs it as its own. Sweet almond carries oleic acid and vitamin E. Applying an oil perfume to the neck is, in practice, applying a small amount of moisturizer with scent in it. The barrier is fed, not stripped.
This is why oil was always the carrier for perfume across the Middle East, North Africa and India. Perfume was part of caring for the skin. It was never separate from it.
The ETHERNAL Perfume Oil is a Damask rose petal infusion in jojoba and sweet almond, in a 10 ml roll on. About 700 petals, seventy percent by weight, no alcohol, no fragrance oil, no essential oil added on top. The scent is one flower, at petal strength, and the ingredient list is three lines long.
How to introduce it to reactive skin
Even the gentlest oil deserves a patch test. One drop on the inside of the forearm, left for twenty four hours. If there is no redness, move to the pulse points.
Apply one or two drops to the inside of the wrists and the base of the throat. Press the wrists together once. Do not rub. Do not layer an alcohol perfume on top, or the alcohol will lift the oil and undo it.
On sensitive skin the first thing most people notice is not the scent. It is that nothing happened. No tightness, no flush, no reaction. That is the point. The scent comes after, and it stays until evening.
My client wears rose now, every day. Her skin stays calm.
